Have you
ever visited Hokkaido, the second largest island in Japan? If so, haven’t you
seen tiny cotton balls fluttering through the trees?
They are the long-tailed tits or Shima
Enagas in Japanese!
These
birds are unique to this particular island in Japan. People also compare them
to cotton candy.
What's so special about this long-tailed
tits bird??
First
thing is their size. They are extremely small with a body length of about 13cm
- 15cm. Anyhow, their tails are double the length of this.
These tit
birds have black eyebrows at the beginning but lose them as their transition
takes place into adults.
With the
loss of their black eyebrows they remain with a complete white face that makes
them look like snowmen. Their snowy white colour perfectly blends the long
winters in the island.
These
small birds live in flocks of about 20-30. They have very cool acrobatic tricks
to flutter around.
The female birds lay nearly 7-10 eggs at
a time to maintain their general counts.
Their
families always rebound due to the sheer count of eggs that they lay during the
winter season. They become vulnerable too.
The
unique version of the long-tailed tits can be seen only in Hokkaido. Yet,
different versions of them are spread in Western Europe across Russia all the
way to Japan.
It’s no
wonder why people love seeing these birds with fluffy round bodies. As for me,
they look like stuffed toy birds. What about you? Leave your comments and
please do share the article with your friends and loved ones to cheer them up.
Happy trails until we meet again!
