We rarely
feel that lifeless fallen logs can be brought back into life. The majority of
us would plan to use these logs for fire and for nothing else. But, this
Japanese artist tried something different with the dead logs and we'll be
sharing details about that with you today.
Mori Kono and his team (MK carving &
sculpting, based in Abbotsford, BC, Canada) utilize fallen logs to create the
most detailed sculptures. These are realistic sculptures that appear as animals
that crawl here and there in a forest. They often select red and yellow cedar,
alder, and birch wood for this process.
A
collection of their 3D wood art can be seen in MK
Carving and Sculpting official website.
The group's works include various types of high-quality wood sculptures as well
as wood carving restoration projects. In addition, their works are customized
according to the clients' wishes too. MK Carving group accepts commissioned
work requests of large scale as well as small scale projects for customized
gifts, gorgeous hand-carved doors, wooden signs, mantels, architectural decors,
totem poles and centerpieces for hotel lobbies.

A small
chisel and some other power tools are the equipment used to carve out delicate
details from the wooden logs. Other than that, amazing color combinations are
used to highlight features such as feathers, eyes and furs, once carving is
done. One of their main objectives is to incorporate the beauty of nature with
wood sculptures.
“If
people see our completed work as art that is able to arouse deeper feelings
about nature, it will be our dream and success!" says the team.

Their
principal mission is displayed on
the website as follows.
“Our main
mission is to bring out, or back, the wondrousness of nature to this busy
modern world. All living things in this world exist and accept every rule of
mother nature… living in balance. If our completed works of art are able to
contribute to society – to have a deeper feeling and respect towards nature and
the wild more often, then that is our greatest dream!”
