Have you
ever tried to weigh your own pet? If so, I don’t think that you need me to
explain how much you need to struggle. These playful animals always want to
escape from weighing them, suggesting that only we’re interested in getting to
know how chunky our fur friend is! Just try to compare yourself struggling to
measure the weight of one pet with the co-workers at the zoo who will have to
struggle to weigh a number of pets – obviously much bigger ones! Have you ever
imagined how it is possible for them to do that? Their huge struggle has
prompted them to come up with some pretty clever tricks to make the task
easier.
Emily Greenhalgh is a marine
biologist and science communicator who worked at the New England Aquarium in
Boston. Once, she posted a picture
to show how a baby penguin is being weighed. Along with that, she explained
the procedure of weighing wild animals.
As all of
us know, weighing a wild animal accurately is impossible and challenging!
Sometimes, the caretakers will have to use plastic tubs and containers as
resources to weigh the animals. In some instances, the penguin chicks are
placed in plastic tubs like cereal cups to weigh. However, the weight of the
tub is later subtracted to get the accurate measurement.
Moreover,
other animals such as harbor seals and sea lions are trained to hop onto the
scale to get the reading of their weight. However, weighing an animal depends
on how often they get a checkup and gain weight.
For
example, the 550-lb green sea turtle, Myrtle, gets a full workup two times a
year and it includes weight measurements, blood draws and ultrasounds while the
giant anacondas of the aquarium get annual checkups the same as humans.
However, the baby animals such as African penguins and rockhoppers undergo
checks quite frequently.
Therefore,
we thought of presenting you with 40+ pictures that would answer all your
questions on weighing animals and provide you some tricky ways to weigh your
one the next time. Scroll down and enjoy the amazing gallery. And also never
miss to comment your ideas and to share the article with your loved ones. Happy
trails until we meet again!
